Indications
Orlistat is indicated as an adjunct in the treatment of obesity, in combination with a hypocaloric diet, for body weight reduction and maintenance of weight loss in adult overweight patients (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 28 kg/m²) who have obesity-related risk factors, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia. Orlistat acts by inhibiting gastrointestinal lipase, which decreases fat absorption in the digestive tract, thus contributing to reduced calorie intake and weight loss. In addition, it can be used in patients who have achieved weight loss and wish to maintain their body weight.
Composition
Each Orlistat capsule contains 120 mg of the active ingredient Orlistat. Excipients: starch, microcrystalline cellulose, talc, among others.
Contraindications
It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Orlistat or to any of the excipients in the formulation, in cases of chronic malabsorption syndrome, cholestasis, and in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Its use is not recommended in patients under 18 years of age.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of eating disorders, diabetes, or gastrointestinal diseases. Regular medical follow-up is necessary to evaluate treatment progress and the need to continue its use. Excessive fat consumption should be avoided, as this may increase gastrointestinal side effects. Additionally, adequate supplementation of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) is recommended during treatment.
