Indications
Lipitor (atorvastatin) is indicated as an adjunct to diet in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, with the aim of reducing elevated total cholesterol and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels. It is also indicated for the prevention of cardiovascular events in high-risk patients, including those with a history of coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, or cardiovascular risk factors. Additionally, Lipitor can be used to treat hypertriglyceridemia and heterozygous familial dyslipidemia in adult and pediatric patients over 10 years of age.
Composition
Each Lipitor tablet contains 80 mg of atorvastatin, as well as excipients such as lactose, corn starch, microcrystalline cellulose, and other inert components.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or to any of the excipients, as well as in those with active liver disease or elevated transaminase levels of unknown cause. It is also contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of liver disease, excessive alcohol consumption, or in those receiving other medications that may interact with atorvastatin. It is advisable to perform liver function tests before starting treatment and periodically during its use. Likewise, the risk of myopathy or rhabdomyolysis should be evaluated, especially in patients with predisposing factors.
Storage
Store in its original packaging, protected from light and moisture, at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
