Indications
Lipitor is indicated for the reduction of elevated levels of total cholesterol, LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglycerides in adult patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia. It is also used for the prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with established coronary heart disease or in those at high risk of cardiovascular disease, including diabetes mellitus and other risk factors.
Atorvastatin acts by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which leads to a decrease in cholesterol synthesis in the liver, thereby increasing LDL uptake in circulation and reducing plasma levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
Composition
Each tablet contains 40 mg of atorvastatin as atorvastatin calcium. Excipients: microcrystalline cellulose, starch, lactose, magnesium stearate, among others.
Contraindications
Lipitor is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or to any of the product's excipients. It should not be administered to patients with active liver disease or unexplained elevations of liver transaminases. It is also contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of liver disease, excessive alcohol consumption, untreated hypothyroidism, or in those taking other medications that may interact with atorvastatin. Monitoring of liver function is recommended before and during treatment.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 °C, in a dry place protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
