Indications

Vancomycin is indicated for the treatment of severe infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and enterococci. It is used in cases of pneumonia, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and other severe systemic infections, especially in patients with penicillin allergy or in those where first-line antibiotics are not effective. It can also be used in the treatment of pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile, particularly in situations where other treatments have failed.

Composition

Each ampoule of Vancomycin contains 500 mg of vancomycin (as hydrochloride) and necessary excipients for its formulation.

Contraindications

Vancomycin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to vancomycin or any component of the formulation. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of allergic reactions to other antibiotics. Its use is not recommended in patients with severe renal failure without adequate monitoring of serum drug levels.

Precautions

Special care should be taken when using vancomycin in patients with renal dysfunction, as it may increase the risk of renal toxicity. Plasma levels should be monitored in patients with compromised renal function. Furthermore, it is important to consider the possibility of adverse reactions such as red man syndrome, which occurs with rapid infusion of the drug. Rapid intravenous administration should be avoided and appropriate dilution recommendations should be followed.

Storage

Store at room temperature, in a dry place and away from direct light. Do not use after the expiry date indicated on the package.
