Indications
Vancocin (Vancomycin) is indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by gram-positive bacteria, including infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It is used in the treatment of endocarditis, meningitis, and pneumonia, as well as skin and soft tissue infections. Vancocin is particularly useful in patients with penicillin allergies or when other antibiotics are not suitable. It is also used in the management of medical device-associated infections and in cases of Clostridium difficile-induced colitis.
Composition
Each vial of Vancocin contains 1 g of vancomycin as vancomycin hydrochloride.
Contraindications
Vancocin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to vancomycin or any of the excipients in the formulation. Its use should be cautious in patients with a history of allergic reactions to other antibiotics, as well as those with pre-existing hearing or kidney problems.
Precautions
Monitoring of renal function and serum vancomycin levels is recommended during treatment, especially in patients with renal dysfunction or those receiving other nephrotoxic drugs. It is also important to observe for the appearance of adverse reactions, such as red man syndrome, which can occur after rapid infusion. In case of toxicity, the dose should be adjusted or treatment discontinuation considered.
