Indications
Valacyclovir is an antiviral indicated for the treatment of infections caused by viruses, including genital and labial herpes simplex, as well as for the reduction of recurrent episodes. It is also used for herpes prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients and for the treatment of herpes zoster. The efficacy of valacyclovir in reducing the transmission of the herpes simplex virus in serodiscordant couples has been evaluated. It is recommended to start treatment as soon as possible after the onset of symptoms to maximize the drug's efficacy.
Composition
Each Valacyclovir tablet contains 500 mg of valacyclovir as the active ingredient. Excipients are: microcrystalline cellulose, corn starch, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide.
Contraindications
Valacyclovir is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to valacyclovir, acyclovir, or any of the formulation components. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, as it may increase the risk of adverse effects.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of kidney disease, as dose adjustment may be necessary. Renal function monitoring is recommended in patients over 65 years of age or those receiving concomitant treatment with other medications that affect renal function. Likewise, the possibility of neurological adverse effects should be considered, especially in patients with predisposing conditions.
