Indications
Imuran (azathioprine) is indicated in the treatment of various autoimmune diseases, such as: rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. In addition, it is used as part of the immunosuppression regimen in patients who have received an organ transplant, to prevent graft rejection. Azathioprine works by inhibiting DNA synthesis, which reduces the proliferation of immune cells, thus contributing to the reduction of the body's immune response.
Composition
Each Imuran tablet contains 50 mg of azathioprine as the active ingredient, as well as excipients that facilitate the formulation and stability of the medication.
Contraindications
Imuran is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azathioprine or any of the excipients in the formulation. Its use is not recommended in patients with severe liver diseases, as well as in those with active, untreated infections. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of hematological diseases.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised when administering Imuran to patients with compromised liver or kidney function. Regular monitoring of blood counts is important, as azathioprine can induce leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. Exposure to infections should also be avoided, as the medication can increase the risk of opportunistic infections.
Storage
Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, and protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
