Indications

Phenytoin sodium is indicated in the treatment of various forms of epilepsy, including partial and generalized seizures. It is also used in the management of ventricular arrhythmia, especially in patients with ventricular tachycardias. This medication acts by stabilizing neuronal membranes, thereby reducing neuronal excitability and preventing the spread of abnormal electrical discharges in the brain.

Composition

Each ampule contains 250 mg of phenytoin sodium as the active ingredient, in addition to excipients that facilitate its administration.

Contraindications

Phenytoin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to phenytoin or any component of the formulation. It should not be used in patients with complete heart block or those with a history of acute intermittent porphyria. Its use should be carefully evaluated in pregnant women, as it may have teratogenic effects.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised when administering phenytoin to patients with hepatic, renal, or cardiovascular problems. Regular monitoring of plasma levels is necessary, as phenytoin has a narrow therapeutic window. Additionally, abrupt discontinuation of treatment should be avoided to prevent an increase in seizure frequency.

Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
