Indications
Bactrim is an antibiotic used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. It is indicated for the treatment of urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, otitis media, and some gastrointestinal infections. It is also used in the prophylaxis and treatment of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. The combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim acts synergistically, inhibiting folic acid synthesis in bacteria, leading to their death.
Composition
Each 5 ml of suspension contains: 200 mg of sulfamethoxazole and 40 mg of trimethoprim, in addition to excipients such as sorbitol, glycerin, and strawberry flavor.
Contraindications
Bactrim is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula, in those with a history of severe adverse reactions to sulfonamides, and in patients with severe renal insufficiency. It is not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, or during lactation.
Precautions
Precautions should be taken in patients with hematological diseases, allergic diseases, and in those with compromised renal function. It is important to monitor renal function and blood counts during prolonged treatment. The risk of hyperkalemia should be evaluated in patients receiving other medications that affect potassium levels.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, at a temperature not exceeding 30 °C. Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiration date indicated on the package.
