Indications
Folic Acid is an essential supplement in situations where dietary intake may be insufficient. It is primarily used to prevent folate deficiencies in pregnant women, as adequate consumption before and during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the fetus. It is also indicated in the treatment of certain types of megaloblastic anemia and in conditions requiring increased red blood cell production. Additionally, it may be recommended in cases of intestinal malabsorption and in patients with restricted diets or who have increased needs for this nutrient.
Composition
Each tablet contains 5 mg of Folic Acid and excipients necessary for its formulation.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Folic Acid or any of the excipients in the formula. Its use is not recommended in patients with undiagnosed anemia, as it could mask a vitamin B12 deficiency.
Precautions
Care should be taken when administering Folic Acid to patients with a history of seizures, as it may aggravate this condition. It is important to monitor patients with conditions that may alter nutrient absorption. Laboratory studies are recommended to evaluate vitamin B12 levels in patients with megaloblastic anemia before initiating treatment.
