Indications
Augmentin is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections that are susceptible to the combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Respiratory infections such as sinusitis, otitis media, and pneumonia.
- Urinary tract infections, including cystitis and pyelonephritis.
- Skin and soft tissue infections, such as cellulitis and abscesses.
- Dental infections, such as periodontitis and dental abscesses.
The combination of amoxicillin, a penicillin-family antibiotic, and clavulanate, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, allows for the eradication of bacteria that might be resistant to amoxicillin alone.
Composition
Each 5 ml of suspension contains:
- 200 mg Amoxicillin (as trihydrate)
- 28.5 mg Clavulanate (as potassium)
Contraindications
Augmentin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanate, or other beta-lactam antibiotics. It is also contraindicated in individuals with a history of jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with amoxicillin/clavulanate use.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of liver disease, in those who are dehydrated, or those on anticoagulant therapy. Renal function monitoring is recommended in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment.
Storage
Store at room temperature, in a dry place and protected from light. Once prepared, the suspension should be used within 7 days and should be refrigerated.
