Indications

Lipitor is indicated for the reduction of elevated total cholesterol, LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia. Additionally, it is used in the prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with established coronary heart disease, as well as in those at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, including type 2 diabetes mellitus. Atorvastatin acts by inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, resulting in a decrease in cholesterol synthesis and an increase in LDL uptake by hepatocytes.

Composition

Each Lipitor tablet contains 40 mg of atorvastatin as the active ingredient. The excipients are as follows: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, starch, magnesium stearate, and other inactive components.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or any of the product's excipients, as well as in those with active liver disease or persistent elevations of serum transaminases. It is also contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and in patients with hereditary or acquired muscle disorders.

Precautions

Liver function monitoring is recommended before starting treatment and during therapy with Lipitor. Likewise, caution should be exercised in patients with a history of liver disease, excessive alcohol consumption, and in those taking other medications that may interact with atorvastatin.

Storage

Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, in a dry place and away from direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
