Indications

Vigabatrin is indicated for the treatment of refractory epileptic seizures in patients with epilepsy. It is particularly effective in cases of focal epilepsy and epileptic syndromes associated with infantile spasms. Its mechanism of action is based on the irreversible inhibition of the GABA-transaminase enzyme, which increases GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) levels in the brain, providing an anticonvulsant effect. Its use must be under strict medical supervision, as its effectiveness and safety may vary among different patients. It has been used in adults and children over 2 years of age, and it is essential to consider the patient's profile before starting treatment.

Composition

Each Vigabatrin tablet contains 500 mg of vigabatrin as the active ingredient, in addition to excipients that allow for the product's formulation and stability.

Contraindications

Vigabatrin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to vigabatrin or to any component of the product. It should not be administered to patients with a history of severe kidney disease, as well as those with uncontrolled psychiatric disorders. Likewise, its use during pregnancy and lactation requires careful evaluation of the benefits and risks.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of depression or psychiatric disorders, as vigabatrin may exacerbate these problems. Regular monitoring of visual function is recommended, as it has been associated with the appearance of irreversible visual disturbances in some patients. It is also advisable to avoid abrupt discontinuation of treatment, as this may lead to an increase in the frequency of seizures.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place, at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date indicated on the package.
