Indications

Metformin is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, especially in overweight patients. This medication helps control blood glucose levels by improving insulin sensitivity and decreasing glucose production in the liver. It can also be used in combination with other antidiabetic medications for better glycemic control. Its use is recommended for patients who have not achieved adequate control of their glucose levels with diet and exercise alone.

Composition

Each Metformin tablet contains 500 mg of metformin hydrochloride as the active ingredient. Additionally, it contains excipients such as starch, microcrystalline cellulose, and magnesium stearate.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to metformin or to any of the excipients. It should not be used in cases of severe renal insufficiency, acute and chronic diseases that may affect renal function, metabolic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of kidney disease, liver disease, or conditions that may compromise renal function. It is important to monitor renal function before starting treatment and regularly during its use. Furthermore, caution should be exercised in patients over 65 years of age or those undergoing surgical procedures or imaging studies that require the administration of iodinated contrast media.
