Indications
Amikacin is indicated for the treatment of serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is commonly used for respiratory tract infections, central nervous system infections, urinary tract infections, and intra-abdominal infections. Additionally, it is used in patients with febrile neutropenia and in infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative bacilli. Its use should be based on the susceptibility of the microorganisms to amikacin and on the patient's clinical evaluation.
Composition
Each ampoule of Amk 500 mg/2 ml contains: Amikacin (as amikacin sulfate) 500 mg, excipients: sodium sulfate, water for injection.
Contraindications
Amikacin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to amikacin or other aminoglycosides. It should also be avoided in patients with severe kidney damage, as it can worsen renal failure and cause toxicity. Its use is not recommended in pregnant women, unless strictly necessary and under medical supervision.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised when administering amikacin to patients with a history of kidney disease, dehydration, or those receiving other nephrotoxic or ototoxic medications. It is essential to monitor renal function and serum amikacin levels during prolonged treatment. Simultaneous administration with other antibiotics that may enhance adverse effects is not recommended.
