Indications
Amikacin is indicated in the treatment of severe bacterial infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to this antibiotic. Its use is indicated in cases of sepsis, lower respiratory tract infections, complicated urinary tract infections, and intra-abdominal infections. It is also used in the treatment of infections in immunocompromised patients and as part of treatment protocols for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. It is essential to perform cultures and sensitivity tests before starting treatment to ensure the effectiveness of the medication.
Composition
Each amikacin ampoule contains 500 mg of amikacin (as amikacin sulfate) in 2 ml of injectable solution. Excipients: water for injection and other inert excipients.
Contraindications
Amikacin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to amikacin or other aminoglycosides. It should not be administered to patients with severe renal dysfunction who are not receiving hemodialysis, nor to those with a history of ototoxicity or nephrotoxicity associated with aminoglycosides.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised when administering Amikacin to patients with compromised renal function, as it may increase the risk of toxicity. Monitoring of renal function tests is recommended during treatment. The risk of ototoxic effects should also be considered, especially in patients with pre-existing ear diseases or those receiving high doses or prolonged treatments. It is important to avoid co-administration with other nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs.
