Indications
Topamax (topiramate) is indicated for the treatment of epilepsy in both adults and children aged two years and older. It is used as adjunctive therapy in partial onset seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and primary generalized seizures. Additionally, it is indicated for the prevention of migraine in adults. This medication works by modulating electrical activity in the brain, which helps reduce the frequency of seizures and the pain associated with migraines.
Composition
Each Topamax tablet contains 50 mg of topiramate as the active ingredient. It also contains excipients that help formulate the medication, ensuring its stability and effectiveness.
Contraindications
Topamax is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to topiramate or any of the excipients in the formulation. It should not be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Caution should also be exercised in patients with a history of kidney stones, liver disease, or respiratory problems.
Precautions
Regular medical follow-up is recommended during treatment with Topamax, especially in patients with a history of psychiatric or metabolic disorders. The use of this medication may be associated with an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and should be carefully evaluated in such cases. Likewise, care should be taken with dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, especially in children and patients engaging in intense physical activity.
Storage
Topamax should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from light and out of the reach of children. The storage temperature should not exceed 30°C.
