Indications
Topamax (topiramate) is indicated for the treatment of epilepsy in adults and children over 2 years of age as adjunctive therapy for partial onset seizures (with or without secondary generalization) and absence seizures. It is also used for the prevention of migraines in adults. This medication works by modulating the activity of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, which contributes to the stabilization of neuronal electrical activity and the reduction of the frequency of epileptic seizures.
Composition
Each Topamax tablet contains 100 mg of topiramate as the active ingredient, as well as excipients that facilitate the formulation of the medication.
Contraindications
Topamax is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to topiramate or to any of the excipients in the formula. Its use is not recommended in pregnant women, especially during the first trimester, due to the risk of congenital malformations associated with the use of antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised when administering Topamax to patients with a history of kidney disease, as it may increase the risk of nephrolithiasis. Likewise, it is recommended to monitor patients with a history of psychiatric disorders, as the use of topiramate has been associated with adverse effects such as depression and suicidal thoughts. It is important to adjust the dose in patients with hepatic or renal insufficiency.
Storage
Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, in a dry place protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
