Indications
Synthroid is indicated for the treatment of hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by a deficiency of thyroid hormones in the body. This deficiency can result from various causes, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, thyroid surgery, or radioactive iodine treatment. It is also used in the treatment of goiter and as replacement therapy in cases of total or partial thyroidectomy. Its use may be necessary in the management of certain conditions such as thyroid cancer, where its administration is required to suppress the secretion of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone).
Composition
Each Synthroid tablet contains 50 mcg of Levothyroxine Sodium as the active ingredient. It also contains excipients that facilitate the formulation and absorption of the medication.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Levothyroxine Sodium or any of the excipients. It should not be used in cases of untreated adrenal disease, acute myocardial infarction, or untreated thyrotoxicosis. Caution should be exercised in patients with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, or coagulation disorders.
Precautions
It is important to regularly monitor hormone levels and adjust the dose according to the individual needs of the patient. It is recommended to start treatment with low doses in elderly patients or those with heart conditions, and gradually increase the dose. The doctor should be informed about any other medications being taken, as there may be interactions that affect the efficacy of Synthroid.
