Indications
Renagel (sevelamer) is indicated for the control of phosphorus levels in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis. Its use is essential in the management of hyperphosphatemia, contributing to the reduction of blood phosphorus levels, which is crucial to prevent complications associated with kidney disease. Additionally, this medication may be used as part of a combined treatment to improve the control of mineral and bone metabolism in patients with kidney failure. It is essential that the use of Renagel be supervised by a physician, who will determine the appropriate dose and treatment regimen for each patient.
Composition
Each Renagel tablet contains 800 mg of sevelamer, which acts as a phosphate binder. Its formulation allows selective binding to phosphorus in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing its absorption.
Contraindications
Renagel is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to sevelamer or any of the excipients in the formulation. Its use should also be avoided in patients with gastrointestinal obstruction or in those with conditions that may predispose to the formation of foreign bodies in the gastrointestinal tract.
Precautions
Caution is recommended in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disorders, including ileus or intestinal obstruction. Additionally, intestinal function and mineral levels should be monitored, especially in patients who may be at risk of developing adverse effects related to mineral metabolism.
