Indications
Questran (cholestyramine) is used in the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia (type IIa) and in the prophylaxis of cardiovascular disease in patients with hypercholesterolemia. It is also indicated for the management of diarrhea associated with cholestasis, as well as in the reduction of pruritus associated with hepatobiliary diseases. This medication works by binding bile acids in the intestine, which results in a decrease in blood cholesterol levels by facilitating its excretion.
Composition
Each sachet contains cholestyramine, an ion-exchange resin that binds to bile acids in the intestine, reducing their reabsorption. In addition, it contains excipients that facilitate its formulation.
Contraindications
Questran is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cholestyramine or any of its components. It should not be used in cases of complete intestinal obstruction or in patients with primary biliary cholangitis.
Precautions
Caution is recommended in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, as well as in those with coagulation disorders, as it may alter the absorption of certain fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). It is important to monitor blood cholesterol and other lipid levels during treatment. Likewise, care should be taken when using it concurrently with other medications that may be affected by cholestyramine binding in the intestine.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, at room temperature, out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiration date indicated on the package.
