Indications
Prolia (Denosumab) is indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high risk of fractures. It is also used in men with osteoporosis, as well as in patients who have received treatment for prostate or breast cancer who may have an increased risk of bone fractures. This medication works by inhibiting the formation and activity of osteoclasts, cells responsible for bone resorption, which helps to increase bone mineral density and reduce the risk of fractures.
Composition
Each pre-filled syringe of Prolia contains 60 mg of Denosumab in 1 ml of injectable solution. Excipients include water for injection, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hydroxide to adjust the pH.
Contraindications
Prolia is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to denosumab or to any of the excipients in the formulation. Its use is not recommended in patients with untreated hypocalcemia. Likewise, caution should be exercised in patients with active infections or a history of immune system problems.
Precautions
Adequate monitoring of calcium levels should be performed before initiating treatment with Prolia. It is important to monitor for the appearance of infections, as the medication may increase the risk of developing infections due to its mechanism of action. Patients are advised to report any symptoms of infection, such as fever or general discomfort. Additionally, women of childbearing potential should use contraception during treatment.
Storage
Store in refrigeration between 2 °C and 8 °C. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. The pre-filled syringe must be protected from light.
