Indications
Pepto Bismol is indicated for the treatment of gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, upset stomach, indigestion, nausea, and heartburn. Bismuth subsalicylate works by coating the gastric mucosa, providing a protective effect and relieving irritation. It is useful in reducing inflammation and can help decrease the frequency of bowel movements in cases of diarrhea. In addition, it can be used as a complement in the management of stomach ulcers and gastritis.
Composition
Each Pepto Bismol tablet contains 262 mg of bismuth subsalicylate. In addition to this active ingredient, the formulation includes excipients that facilitate the administration and absorption of the medication.
Contraindications
Pepto Bismol should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to bismuth, salicylates, or any other component of the formulation. It is contraindicated in individuals with a history of peptic ulcer, active gastrointestinal bleeding, or in those with conditions that increase the risk of bleeding. Its use is not recommended in children under 12 years of age without medical supervision.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with renal insufficiency, as bismuth can accumulate and cause toxicity. Likewise, prolonged use of the medication without the supervision of a healthcare professional is recommended to be avoided. It is important to consult a doctor before starting treatment if other medications are being taken, especially anticoagulants or anti-inflammatories.
Storage
Store at room temperature, in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiration date indicated on the package.
