Indications
Mirena is an intrauterine device indicated for long-term contraception in women who wish to avoid pregnancy. It is also indicated for the treatment of endometrial hyperplasia and for the management of menorrhagia, i.e., heavy menstrual bleeding. The device releases Levonorgestrel, a hormone that acts by modifying the endometrium and altering cervical mucus, which hinders sperm mobility and egg fertilization. Mirena can be used for a period of up to five years, after which it must be replaced.
Composition
Each device contains 52 mg of Levonorgestrel, releasing a constant amount of the hormone into the uterus.
Contraindications
This device should not be used in women with a history of cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, recent pelvic infections, or clotting disorders. It is also contraindicated in people who have allergic reactions to Levonorgestrel or any of the device's components.
Precautions
Special care should be taken in women with a history of migraines, hypertension, or diabetes mellitus. Regular medical follow-up is important during the use of the device to assess tolerance and detect possible complications. In addition, the general health status and gynecological conditions should be evaluated before IUD insertion.
Storage
Store the device in its original packaging at room temperature, protected from light and moisture. Do not use after the expiration date indicated on the package.
