Indications
Mestinon is indicated for the treatment of myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue. Pyridostigmine acts as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, which increases the amount of acetylcholine available at the neuromuscular junction, thereby improving nerve transmission and muscle function. This medication is useful for relieving muscle weakness symptoms in patients suffering from this condition. It can also be used in emergency situations to reverse the effects of neuromuscular blockers during general anesthesia.
Composition
Each Mestinon tablet contains 60 mg of pyridostigmine as the active ingredient. They are presented as oral tablets and may contain excipients such as starch, microcrystalline cellulose, and magnesium stearate.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to pyridostigmine or any of the formula's components. It should not be administered in cases of mechanical intestinal obstruction or in patients with uncontrolled bronchial asthma.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised when administering Mestinon to patients with cardiac disorders, as it may cause bradycardia or alterations in cardiac conduction. In addition, close monitoring is recommended in patients with a history of seizures. It is important to consider the possibility of interactions with other medications, so the doctor should be informed about any other ongoing treatment.
