Indications
Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is indicated for the treatment of patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, as well as for the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with coronary heart disease. Its use is also indicated in patients with mixed hyperlipidemia and in those with homozygous familial dyslipidemia. This therapy should be complemented with an appropriate diet and lifestyle changes. Atorvastatin acts by inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, which results in a decrease in cholesterol production in the liver and an increase in the uptake of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) by the liver, thus contributing to the normalization of blood cholesterol levels.
Composition
Each Lipitor tablet contains 10 mg of atorvastatin as the active ingredient. Excipients include: microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, starch, among others.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or to any of the excipients in the formula. It should not be administered to patients with active liver disease or unexplained elevations of liver transaminases. It is also not indicated during pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions
Caution is recommended in patients with a history of muscle diseases or a family history of myopathies. Regular monitoring of liver function is important during treatment. Likewise, the risk of myopathy should be assessed in patients taking other medications that may increase plasma atorvastatin concentration.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, at room temperature, protected from light and humidity. Keep out of reach of children.
