Indications
Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is indicated for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia in adult and pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years. This medication is used to reduce elevated levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein), and triglycerides, as well as to increase HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein). It is also recommended for patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in those with risk factors.
Composition
Each Lipitor tablet contains 40 mg of atorvastatin as the active ingredient, as well as excipients that facilitate its formulation and absorption.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or any of the formulation components. It should not be administered in cases of active or persistent liver disease, and in pregnant or breastfeeding women, due to possible adverse effects on the fetus or infant.
Precautions
Caution is recommended in patients with a history of liver disease, excessive alcohol consumption, or who are taking other medications that may interact with atorvastatin. It is important to perform liver function tests before and during treatment. Additionally, the possibility of myopathy or rhabdomyolysis should be evaluated, especially in patients with risk factors.
