Indications

Lasix (Furosemide) is indicated for the treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and kidney diseases, including nephrotic syndrome. Additionally, it is used in the management of arterial hypertension, either as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensives. The diuretic effect of furosemide is associated with the inhibition of the sodium-potassium-chloride cotransport system in the loop of Henle, resulting in an increase in the excretion of water and electrolytes, thus helping to reduce fluid overload in patients with specific conditions.

Composition

Each Lasix tablet contains 40 mg of furosemide as the active ingredient. It also contains excipients such as starch, talc, and other inactive components that allow for the formulation of the medication.

Contraindications

Lasix is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to furosemide or to any of the excipients in the formulation. It should not be administered in cases of anuria, dehydration, hypovolemia, or severe renal failure. Likewise, caution should be exercised in patients with a history of gout, and in those who are being treated with other diuretics or medications that may affect electrolyte balance.

Precautions

Monitoring of renal function and electrolytes is recommended in patients receiving Lasix treatment, especially in the elderly and in those with pre-existing conditions that may predispose to electrolyte imbalances. The use of this medication should be evaluated in the context of other medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, liver disease, or heart disease. Dosage adjustment may be necessary in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
