Indications
Lantus (Insulin Glargine) is indicated for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in adults and children. It is used to improve glycemic control in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as part of a comprehensive regimen that may include other oral antidiabetics or insulin. Lantus provides a prolonged release of insulin, allowing for a reduction in post-meal glucose spikes and more stable blood glucose level control throughout the day and night.
Composition
Each mL of Lantus contains Insulin Glargine 100 Units/mL. Excipients include: water for injection, hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment.
Contraindications
Lantus is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to insulin glargine or any of the excipients in the formula. It is also contraindicated in patients with episodes of severe hypoglycemia or in those who present with diabetic ketoacidosis without adequate treatment.
Precautions
It is essential to regularly monitor blood glucose levels, especially at the beginning of treatment or when dosage changes are made. Caution should be exercised in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function, as this may require dose adjustments. Likewise, intravenous administration of Lantus should be avoided, as it is not indicated for this route of administration.
Storage
Lantus should be stored refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze. Once opened, it can be stored at room temperature (not exceeding 25°C) for a maximum of 28 days. Vials should not be exposed to direct light.
