Indications
Keytruda (pembrolizumab) is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with metastatic or inoperable melanoma. It is also used in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), as well as in the treatment of metastatic urothelial carcinoma. This medication acts as an immune checkpoint inhibitor, blocking the PD-1 protein in T-cells, which allows for a stronger immune response against tumor cells. Patients must be carefully evaluated to determine eligibility for this treatment, and its use in combination with other therapeutic agents is recommended in certain cases. Furthermore, efficacy has been demonstrated in patients with classical Hodgkin lymphoma, head and neck carcinoma, and other cancer types, based on biomarker evaluation and tumor response.
Composition
Each vial of Keytruda contains 100 mg of pembrolizumab, as well as excipients that allow for the proper formulation of the medication. The product insert should be consulted for detailed information on the excipients and their function.
Contraindications
Keytruda is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to pembrolizumab or to any of the product's excipients. It is also contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women, due to the lack of adequate studies demonstrating safety in these populations.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of autoimmune diseases, as the medication may exacerbate these conditions. Regular monitoring of patients during treatment is important to detect possible adverse effects, including immune-related reactions that may affect organs such as the lungs, liver, or thyroid.
