Indications
Imodium is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute non-infectious diarrhea in adults and children over 12 years of age, as well as in the management of chronic diarrhea associated with conditions such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Loperamide works by decreasing intestinal motility and increasing intestinal transit time, which helps reduce the frequency of bowel movements and improve stool consistency. This medication is not suitable for treating diarrhea caused by bacterial infections or antibiotic administration, due to its mechanism of action which can lead to complications in these cases.
Composition
Each Imodium tablet contains 2 mg of loperamide as the active ingredient. Additionally, it includes excipients such as lactose, corn starch, and magnesium stearate.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to loperamide or any of the excipients. It is also contraindicated in cases of diarrhea caused by bacterial infections, pseudomembranous colitis, or in patients with irritable bowel syndrome with predominant constipation. It should not be administered to children under 12 years of age without medical supervision.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised when using Imodium in patients with liver disease, as it may affect drug metabolism. Patients with high fever or blood in the stool should be monitored. If no improvement is observed within 48 hours, a doctor should be consulted.
Storage
Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 °C, in a dry place away from direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
