Indications
Hydrea is indicated in the treatment of various malignant neoplasms, especially in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia and in the treatment of certain types of melanoma. It is also used in the management of pain crises in patients with sickle cell anemia, helping to reduce the frequency of painful episodes and the need for blood transfusions. Hydroxyurea acts as a cytotoxic agent, interfering with DNA synthesis and, in this way, inhibiting cell proliferation.
Composition
Each Hydrea capsule contains 500 mg of hydroxyurea. Excipients are: gelatin, glycerin, titanium dioxide and other inert components that allow the formulation of the medicine.
Contraindications
Hydrea is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to hydroxyurea or any of the excipients. It should not be administered during pregnancy or breastfeeding, unless the benefits outweigh the potential risks. It is contraindicated in patients with severe anemia, leukopenia or thrombocytopenia.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency, as well as in those receiving radiotherapy. Regular monitoring of hematological function during treatment is important. Exposure to infections should be avoided, as hydroxyurea can cause immunosuppression. Risks and benefits should be considered before initiating treatment.
Storage
Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 °C, in a dry place protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
