Indications
Fosamax Plus is indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, as well as for the prevention of fractures in this population. It is also used in men with osteoporosis, and in patients receiving glucocorticoid treatment that may affect bone mineral density. Alendronate works by inhibiting bone resorption, while cholecalciferol helps maintain adequate levels of vitamin D, necessary for calcium absorption and bone health. It is essential that the use of Fosamax Plus is carried out under the supervision of a physician, who will assess the need and duration of treatment, as well as the patient's general health status.
Composition
Each tablet of Fosamax Plus contains 70 mg of alendronate sodium and 5600 IU of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3).
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula. It is also contraindicated in patients with esophageal disorders that delay the passage of the medication to the stomach, as well as in those with hypocalcemia or severe kidney problems.
Precautions
Precautions should be taken in patients with a history of gastric or duodenal ulcers, as well as in those with swallowing problems. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake is recommended. It is important for the patient to inform their doctor about any additional medications they are taking to avoid interactions. In addition, the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients treated with bisphosphonates should be considered.
