Indications
Fluoxac is indicated for the treatment of major depressive episodes, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders. This medication acts as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), which helps increase serotonin levels in the brain, thereby improving mood and reducing anxiety. Fluoxac can also be used in the treatment of bulimia nervosa and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, with medical evaluation being essential to determine the suitability of its use in each particular case.
Composition
Each Fluoxac tablet contains 20 mg of fluoxetine as the active ingredient. Additionally, it contains excipients such as lactose, starch, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and other inactive components that facilitate the formulation of the medication.
Contraindications
Fluoxac is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to fluoxetine or any of the components of the formula. It should not be administered in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or in patients taking thioridazine. Caution should be exercised in its use in individuals with a history of seizure disorders, mania, or hypomania.
Precautions
Medical monitoring is necessary during treatment with Fluoxac, as it may increase the risk of suicide in young patients. Regular evaluation of the patient's mental state is recommended. Interactions with other medications, especially those affecting the central nervous system, should also be considered. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before starting treatment.
