Indications

Epival ER is indicated for the treatment of various forms of epilepsy, including generalized and focal epilepsy. It is used in the management of tonic-clonic epileptic seizures, as well as episodes of myoclonic seizures and absence seizures. Furthermore, it can be prescribed as an adjunctive treatment in patients with mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder, to help stabilize emotional state and prevent manic episodes. The efficacy of divalproex sodium has been demonstrated in clinical studies, where a significant reduction in the frequency of epileptic seizures has been observed in patients who do not respond to other antiepileptic treatments.

Composition

Each Epival ER tablet contains 500 mg of divalproex sodium as the active ingredient. It also contains excipients such as microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and other inactive components that facilitate the formulation and administration of the medication.

Contraindications

Epival ER is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to valproate or any of its components, as well as in those with severe liver diseases or metabolic urea cycle disorders. It should not be used in patients with a history of pancreatitis or acute intermittent porphyria.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised when prescribing Epival ER to patients with a history of hematological disorders, as well as in those with a history of liver diseases, as there may be an increased risk of hepatotoxicity. It is important to monitor liver function and serum valproate levels, especially at the beginning of treatment. Careful monitoring is also recommended in women of childbearing potential due to the potential risk of teratogenicity.
