Indications
Emend (aprepitant) is indicated for the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy in adult patients. It is used as part of a treatment regimen to prevent acute and delayed nausea that may occur after the administration of highly emetogenic chemotherapeutic agents. Additionally, it can be used in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing surgery. Emend acts as a neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist, blocking the action of substance P, a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in emesis.
Composition
Each tablet contains 125 mg of aprepitant as the active ingredient. Excipients include: microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and other inactive components that facilitate the formulation of the medicine.
Contraindications
Emend is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to aprepitant or any component of the formula. It should not be administered in combination with certain medications that are metabolized by the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, due to possible interactions. It is important to evaluate a history of allergies and pre-existing medical conditions before starting treatment.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with hepatic insufficiency, as the metabolism of aprepitant may be affected. Likewise, it is recommended to monitor patients who are receiving concomitant treatments that may increase the risk of side effects. It is important to inform patients about possible adverse effects and the need to consult their doctor for any unusual symptoms.
Storage
Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. Keep out of reach of children and protect from light and moisture. Do not use after the expiration date indicated on the package.
