Indications
Depakene is indicated for the treatment of various forms of epilepsy, including partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and absence seizures. It is used in the prevention of manic episodes in patients with bipolar disorder, as well as in the management of migraines. Its use may be considered in patients who have not responded adequately to other anticonvulsant treatments. Dosage should be adjusted according to the individual needs of the patient and the clinical response to the medication.
Composition
Each capsule contains 250 mg of valproic acid as the active ingredient. In addition, it contains excipients such as gelatin, glycerol, and other components that allow for the capsule formulation.
Contraindications
Depakene is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to valproic acid or any of the excipients. It should not be used in patients with active liver disease, urea cycle disorders, or in those who are pregnant, unless strictly necessary and under medical supervision. It is also contraindicated in patients with a history of pancreatitis related to valproate use.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised when using Depakene in patients with liver disease, hematological disorders, or those receiving concomitant treatment that may affect liver function. Monitoring of blood valproic acid levels is recommended to avoid toxicity. During treatment, the appearance of symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts should be monitored, as some patients may experience changes in mood.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiration date indicated on the package.
