Indications
Azulfidine is indicated for the treatment of various inflammatory conditions, primarily in the management of active ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis. This medication works by reducing inflammation in the intestine and joints, which helps to alleviate the symptoms associated with these diseases. Additionally, it is used for the prevention of flare-ups in patients with chronic ulcerative colitis, as well as for the management of Crohn's disease in some cases. It is essential that the use of this medication be supervised by a doctor to ensure its effectiveness and minimize the risk of adverse effects.
Composition
Each Azulfidine tablet contains 500 mg of sulfasalazine, as well as necessary excipients for its formulation. Sulfasalazine is a compound that breaks down in the intestine into sulfapyridine and 5-aminosalicylic acid, which are the active components in the treatment of the aforementioned pathologies.
Contraindications
Azulfidine is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to sulfasalazine, sulfonamides, or any component of the formula. It should also be avoided in patients with a history of porphyria, as well as in those with severe hepatic or renal insufficiency. Its use is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation, unless absolutely necessary and under strict medical supervision.
Precautions
Regular laboratory monitoring is recommended for patients undergoing treatment with Azulfidine to assess liver and kidney function, as well as blood cell count, due to the risk of hematological adverse effects. Likewise, caution should be exercised in patients with asthma, as the medication may induce allergic reactions.
