Indications
Augmentin is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by microorganisms susceptible to the combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. These infections may include:
- Respiratory tract infections, such as sinusitis and pneumonia.
- Ear infections, such as otitis media.
- Urinary tract infections, such as cystitis and pyelonephritis.
- Skin and soft tissue infections, such as cellulitis and abscesses.
The use of Augmentin is appropriate in pediatric patients presenting with these conditions, and its suspension formulation facilitates administration in children.
Composition
Each 5 ml of suspension contains:
- Amoxicillin (as trihydrate) 400 mg
- Clavulanic acid (as potassium salt) 57 mg
Contraindications
It is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or any other component of the formula. It is also contraindicated in those with a history of jaundice or hepatic dysfunction related to the administration of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of gastrointestinal diseases, especially colitis, as well as in those with renal insufficiency. Liver function tests are recommended for prolonged treatments. Prolonged use may result in superinfection by non-susceptible organisms.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, at temperatures not exceeding 30°C. Keep out of reach of children. Once reconstituted, the suspension should be refrigerated and used within 7 days.
