Indications

Zovirax is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by viruses, including herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and chickenpox. It is effective in reducing the duration and severity of cold sore and genital herpes episodes, as well as in preventing recurrent infections. Aciclovir acts by interfering with viral DNA replication, which helps control the infection and relieve associated symptoms. Zovirax is also used in immunocompromised patients to prevent herpes infections.

Composition

Each Zovirax tablet contains 200 mg of aciclovir as the active ingredient. It also contains excipients such as starch, talc, and other inactive components that facilitate the drug's formulation.

Contraindications

Zovirax is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any of the excipients in the formulation. Its use is not recommended in patients with severe renal insufficiency without appropriate dose adjustment.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of kidney disease, as aciclovir is primarily excreted by this route. Furthermore, adequate hydration should be maintained during treatment to prevent nephrotoxicity. In elderly patients, dosage adjustment and closer monitoring should be considered. Concomitant use with other medications that may affect renal function should be avoided.
