Indications
Xultophy is indicated for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes, as an adjunct to diet and exercise, when glycemic control is not adequately achieved with metformin alone or with metformin and other oral antidiabetic agents. This medication combines two antidiabetic agents: insulin degludec, a long-acting insulin analog, and liraglutide, a GLP-1 agonist. Its use is indicated in patients who require intensified treatment for the maintenance of blood glucose levels.
Composition
Each ml of solution contains 3.6 mg of insulin degludec and 1.2 mg of liraglutide. Excipients include water for injection, sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hydroxide.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to insulin degludec, liraglutide, or any of the excipients. It is also contraindicated in patients with type 1 diabetes and in those with diabetic ketoacidosis. Its use is not recommended in individuals with a history of acute pancreatitis.
Precautions
Precautions should be taken in patients with kidney or liver diseases, as well as in those with a history of pancreatitis. It is important to monitor for the occurrence of hypoglycemia and adjust doses according to the patient's needs. Cardiac function should also be evaluated in patients with a history of heart disease, due to the potential effects of liraglutide.
Storage
Store refrigerated between 2 °C and 8 °C. Do not freeze. Once opened, the product can be stored at room temperature (below 30 °C) and must be used within 21 days.
