Indications
Valextra (valacyclovir) is indicated for the treatment of herpes virus infections, including herpes zoster in adults, genital herpes in immunocompetent patients, and for the suppression of recurrent infections in individuals with a history of frequent episodes. The drug works by inhibiting viral DNA replication, which reduces the duration and severity of outbreaks, as well as the risk of virus transmission. It is also used in immunocompromised patients for the prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections.
Composition
Each Valextra capsule contains 1000 mg of valacyclovir as the active ingredient. Excipients: lactose monohydrate, starch, among others.
Contraindications
Valextra is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to valacyclovir, acyclovir, or any of the product's excipients. Its use is not recommended in patients with severe renal impairment without appropriate dose adjustment. It is also contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless the benefit outweighs the potential risk.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of dehydration, renal impairment, or neurological disorders, as valacyclovir can cause renal toxicity and adverse effects on the central nervous system. Renal function monitoring is recommended during treatment, especially in elderly patients or those receiving other nephrotoxic medications.
Storage
Store at room temperature (between 15 and 30 °C), in a dry place and away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
