Indications
Lomotil is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea. Loperamide works by reducing intestinal motility, which allows for greater absorption of fluids and electrolytes, thereby decreasing the frequency and urgency of bowel movements. This medication is useful in cases of uncomplicated diarrhea, including travel-related diarrhea and traveler's diarrhea. However, it should not be used in cases of diarrhea caused by severe bacterial infections or in the presence of blood in the stool.
Composition
Each Lomotil tablet contains 2 mg of loperamide hydrochloride as the active ingredient. Excipients: lactose, starch, talc, and magnesium stearate.
Contraindications
Lomotil is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to loperamide or any of its excipients. Its use is not recommended in patients with diarrhea caused by bacterial infections or in patients with acute ulcerative colitis. It is also contraindicated in patients with irritable bowel syndrome and in those with intestinal obstruction.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with liver diseases, as well as in those taking other medications that may affect loperamide metabolism. If symptoms persist for more than 48 hours, treatment should be discontinued, and a doctor should be consulted. Prolonged use without medical supervision is not recommended.
Storage
Store at room temperature, between 15 and 30 °C, in a dry place and out of reach of children.
