Indications
Lipitor is indicated for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, as well as for the reduction of cardiovascular events in patients with established coronary heart disease. It is also used in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in patients with risk factors, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and a family history of cardiovascular disease. Atorvastatin works by inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, which is a key step in cholesterol synthesis in the liver, resulting in a decrease in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglyceride concentrations, and an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) concentrations.
Composition
Each Lipitor tablet contains 20 mg of atorvastatin as the active ingredient. In addition, it contains excipients such as microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, and magnesium stearate, among others.
Contraindications
The use of Lipitor is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or to any of the excipients in the formula. It is also contraindicated in patients with active liver disease, including those characterized by persistent elevations of liver transaminases, and in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Precautions
Caution is advised when administering Lipitor to patients with a history of liver disease, excessive alcohol consumption, or those taking other medications that may interact with atorvastatin. Regular monitoring of liver transaminases during treatment is important.
Storage
Store Lipitor at room temperature, between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, in a dry place protected from light. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
