Indications
Ampicillin is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria susceptible to this antibiotic. It is used in upper and lower respiratory tract infections, ear, nose, and throat infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and bacterial meningitis. Its use is effective in the treatment of infections caused by Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus (non-penicillinase producing), and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Ampicillin can be used in combination with other medications for the treatment of more complex infections.
Composition
Each tablet contains 1 g of Ampicillin as trihydrate, as well as necessary excipients for the formulation of the medicine.
Contraindications
Ampicillin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to penicillins or to any of the components of the formula. It should also be avoided in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to other beta-lactam antibiotics. Its use during pregnancy and lactation must be evaluated by a physician.
Precautions
Precautions should be taken in patients with a history of gastrointestinal diseases, especially those with colitis. Close monitoring is important in patients with renal insufficiency, as dosage adjustments may be necessary. Ampicillin administration may interfere with the effectiveness of some oral contraceptives, so the use of alternative contraceptive methods is recommended.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date indicated on the packaging.
