Indications
Amikacin is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by gram-negative bacteria, including those resistant to other antibiotics. It is commonly used in the treatment of respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, and septicemia. Additionally, it can be used in bone and joint infections, as well as in the treatment of infections in immunocompromised patients. This medication is useful in empirical therapy for severe infections where the involvement of gram-negative pathogens is suspected. Amikacin is particularly effective against strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii.
Composition
Each ampoule contains: Amikacin (as sulfate) 500 mg.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to amikacin, other aminoglycosides, or any component of the formulation. Its use should also be avoided in patients with severe renal damage or those with neuromuscular disorders, such as myasthenia gravis, due to the risk of potentiation of neuromuscular blockade.
Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with impaired renal function, as amikacin can accumulate and cause toxicity. Regular renal function tests are recommended during treatment. The risk of ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity should also be considered, especially in prolonged treatments or high doses. Concomitant administration with other potentially ototoxic or nephrotoxic medications should be carefully evaluated.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, at temperatures not exceeding 25 °C. Protect from light. Do not use after the expiration date indicated on the package.
