Indications

Olanzapine is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and for the treatment of manic and mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder. It is also used in the treatment of major depressive disorders, as part of a combined therapy. Olanzapine acts on various receptors in the brain, which helps improve psychotic symptoms and stabilize mood in patients with bipolar disorders. Its use can be beneficial in managing symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and thought disturbances, as well as in preventing manic episodes.

Composition

Each Olanzapine tablet contains 10 mg of olanzapine as the active ingredient, in addition to excipients necessary for the drug's formulation.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to olanzapine or to any of the excipients in the formulation. Its use is not recommended in patients with a history of breast cancer, as well as in those with an acute episode of liver disease or severe hepatic insufficiency. Its use should be carefully evaluated in patients with a history of seizures or those who present risk factors for seizures.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised when administering olanzapine to elderly patients, especially those with dementia, due to the increased risk of adverse events. In addition, patients should be monitored for the possible appearance of neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a rare but serious adverse effect. The patient's metabolic function should be evaluated, as olanzapine can cause weight gain and alterations in blood glucose and lipid levels.
