Indications

Nitrofurantoin is indicated for the treatment of urinary tract infections caused by susceptible organisms, including Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and other pathogens. It is especially effective in treating uncomplicated acute cystitis. Nitrofurantoin works by interfering with bacterial protein production and DNA synthesis, which contributes to the drug's antimicrobial activity. Its use is recommended for patients experiencing symptoms of a urinary infection, such as painful urination, frequent urination, and lower abdominal pain.

Composition

Each capsule contains 100 mg of nitrofurantoin as the active ingredient. Excipients: starch, gelatin, colorants, and other excipients necessary for product formulation.

Contraindications

Nitrofurantoin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to nitrofurantoin or any of the product's excipients. It is also contraindicated in those with severe renal insufficiency, as it can lead to drug accumulation and increase the risk of toxicity. Furthermore, its use is not recommended for pregnant women in their last trimester, due to the possibility of hemolysis in the newborn.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of pulmonary disease, as nitrofurantoin can cause adverse pulmonary reactions. Renal function monitoring should also be considered during treatment, especially in elderly patients or those with pre-existing conditions. It is important to avoid prolonged use to prevent the occurrence of adverse reactions.
