Indications

Metformin is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adult patients and in children over 10 years of age. It is used as initial treatment in combination with diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in patients. It can be administered as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetics or insulin, in those patients who do not achieve adequate blood glucose control with metformin alone. Additionally, it may be useful in the treatment of insulin resistance and in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) under certain conditions.

Composition

Each tablet contains 850 mg of metformin (as metformin hydrochloride) as the active ingredient. Excipients: starch, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and other inert excipients.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to metformin or to any of the excipients of the formulation. It should not be used in cases of severe renal insufficiency (Glomerular Filtration Rate < 30 ml/min), hepatic insufficiency, acute metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, or in conditions that may lead to tissue hypoxia.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of kidney, liver, or heart disease, as well as in those who may be at risk of dehydration. It is important to monitor kidney function during treatment. It is recommended to temporarily discontinue treatment before surgical procedures or radiological examinations that require the administration of iodinated contrast agents.

Store in its original packaging, in a cool, dry place, at a temperature not exceeding 30 °C. Keep out of reach of children.
