Indications

Metformin is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control. It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetics or insulin in patients who do not achieve adequate blood glucose control. Metformin can also be used in overweight or obese patients, and in certain cases, its use in preventing diabetes in individuals with glucose intolerance has been studied.

Composition

Each tablet contains: Metformin (as hydrochloride) 500 mg; excipients: starch, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, among others.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to metformin or any of the excipients. It should not be administered in cases of severe renal failure (creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min), acute or chronic diseases that alter renal function, metabolic acidosis, and during pregnancy and lactation, unless the benefits outweigh the risks.

Precautions

Caution should be exercised in patients with mild to moderate renal insufficiency, liver diseases, or who are being treated with other medications that may affect renal function. Regular monitoring of renal function and blood glucose is recommended. Patients should be warned about the risk of lactic acidosis, although rare, it is a serious complication associated with the use of metformin.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place, at a temperature not exceeding 30 °C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
